In the grim progression of POE 1Items, not all endgames are about slaying gods or mapping continents. Some of the most intricate and rewarding long-term strategies involve not a sword, but a ledger and a gift for manipulation. This is the domain of the **Betrayal** league mechanic, featuring the **Immortal Syndicate**. This is not a simple combat encounter; it is an elaborate, persistent board game of alliances, rivalries, and strategic interrogation that unfolds across your entire journey, rewarding those who master its social calculus with some of the game's most powerful and targeted crafts.

The Syndicate consists of 18 members, divided into four divisions: Transportation, Fortification, Research, and Intervention. When you encounter a safehouse in the wild, you'll face a subset of these members. Upon defeating them, you are presented with a choice: execute them for item rewards, interrogate them for intelligence toward raiding their division's safehouse, or bargain to adjust their relationships. This is where the strategy begins. Promoting a member increases their rank within their division, making future encounters harder but vastly improving the rewards from their division's safehouse. Creating rivalries between members causes them to appear in encounters together and drop valuable **Veiled** items when one defeats the other.

The ultimate goal is to assemble your ideal Syndicate board and then launch raids on their fortified safehouses. Each division's safehouse offers unique reward types. The **Research** safehouse is often prioritized, as its leader, **It That Fled**, can reward the crafting bench option for "Breachstone Blessing" or **Pure Breachstones**, while **Vorici** can change socket colors without cost. The Transportation leader, **Hillock**, can craft up to 28% quality on weapons, armor, or flasks. Managing the board to place the most valuable members as leaders of the correct divisions is a long-term puzzle.

The pinnacle of the system is the Mastermind herself, Catarina. Defeating her requires fully filling the intelligence bars of all four divisions. Her confrontation is a difficult multi-phase fight, but victory resets the entire Syndicate board and rewards **Veiled** items that unlock powerful crafting recipes, along with a generous stock of the Syndicate's unique currency, **Jun's Orbs**. These orbs allow you to add a **Veiled** modifier to an item, which you can then unveil to permanently learn its recipe for the crafting bench.

Thus, **Betrayal** is a system of deep, meta-game strategy that exists parallel to combat. It rewards long-term planning, memory, and a willingness to pass up immediate loot for greater future gains. It provides deterministic access to powerful crafts and valuable currencies, making engagement with its board game not just an optional activity, but a cornerstone of efficient endgame progression for those willing to learn its ruthless, interpersonal politics. In Wraeclast, sometimes the most powerful move is not a spell, but a well-placed betrayal.
